Well, the Tuesday Afternoon Schuetzen Verein held our first Winter League shoot this afternoon. We shoot outdoors, not being able to come up with an indoor range. We had one lined up, but the owner went loco. So our range is the 25 yard pistol range, with our targets set up at the 16 2/3 yard line. The left side of the pistol range has a big, thick wall. Once on the other side of the wall, if you hold a steady NW bearing, you'll wind up in the Aleutians, that being the next closest land.
Five of us shot today. Four turned in scores, all well below our averages from last year. We've been shooting OH at 100 & 200 yards since last April and our scores were getting to be almost respectable. When you add those 10s and 12s, you can build a 50-round score up into the 1000+ range. The gallery target is less forgiving, <17=0. Just finishing a target with no flyers is my first goal.
Most interesting shooting today was David L, trying out 4 different rifles. Two were big centerfires with Lee Shaver inserts; A .40-82 Hepburn and a 9.5x47 Aydt. Both seemed as competitive as anything else we were shooting. If you are looking for an affordable way to enter the Winter League, give one of the inserts consideration. But plan on leaving the insert in place for the season. Frequent removal & replacement does not improve accuracy.
I put a MVA 5 power Winchester pattern scopes on a Winder Musket, but the trigger pull was too heavy to let me keep the crosshairs lined up. If I was to spend $664 on another scope for gallery work, I would put some effort into a Fecker or Lyman Targetspot or maybe a Unertl small game scope.
I gave up with the Winder and went back to the Farrow. I have a serious love affair with that rifle.
I tried Aguila Golden Eagle Target (LR) in the Winder. It's OK for practice, but if you were trying to break 1100, shooting something else would be a good idea.
2 weeks ago, I tried Norma Match in the Farrow at 100 yards. Old W. Milton's rifle does not like that stuff. 4 or 5 serious flyers per box. This week, I used Wolf Match Extra.
